Herbicide Treatment of Japanese Knotweed
Herbicidal Treatment Of Japanese Knotweed.

Application of Herbicides
Miller Preservation offer two principal methods of application of Herbicide for the control and ultimate eradication of Japanese Knotweed, both the more traditional spray application and direct injection of the plant stem.
Please note that only qualified operators should use herbicides and they must follow the method statement when using them.
Herbicidal Spraying:
Spray Application
Glyphosate is the only non-persistent Herbicide commonly used in or near water. Treatment should be carried out between May and October with later treatment being preferable. It should be noted that Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide and will kill most plants, including grass. With careful application it may be used in the vicinity of mature trees and shrubs.
In the event that spray application is to be used around grassed areas it may be appropriate to utilise Picloram and 2,4-D amine as these are selective and can be utilised without damaging grass. Both Picloram and 2,4-D amine are persistent herbicides, lasting 2 years in the case of Picloram and around 1 month for 2,4-D amine.
Where a risk of contaminating a watercourse is present the selection of herbicides is limited to certain products of glyphosate and 2,4-D amine that have been specifically approved for use near water. Note that not all herbicides containing glyphosate and 2,4-D amine are suitable to use in or near water.
Where it is the intention for soil to be immediately re-used for landscaping or planting then a non-residual herbicide, such as glyphosate would be appropriate. If this could be delayed for around two months then other Herbicides such as those containing triclopyr could be considered. In the event that the area is to be hard landscaped or replanting delayed for two years then a persistent chemical like Picloram may be appropriate where it could be used away from either watercourses or trees.
Herbicidal Injection.
Stem Injection
Injection is a specifically targeted application method for Herbicidal Delivery when compared with Spray Application. Where in spray application all surfaces of the plant and the surrounding ground are treated with the Herbicide with Stem Injection a controlled quantity of Herbicide is injected directly into the stem of the plant allowing direct and accurate application to the target plants only. This method of application is so accurate that the Herbicide can be applied even around trees which have "Tree Preservation Orders" or TPOs, Stem Injection does not affect surrounding vegetation or wildlife, further the Environment Agency has accepted and approved Stem Injection for use on Organic Approved Farms.
Benefits to Herbicidal Treatment.
With our well established expertise in chemical applications and biocide treatments Miller Preservation offer a specialist programme of Herbicidal based solutions to the problem of Japanese Knotweed. The fundamental reasoning behind this decision is to provide a cost effective solution principally tailored towards clients where finding a cost effective targeted approach to the problem is the main priority. Remember that Herbicidal Treatment will require between 24 and 48 months to confirm that the infestation has been eliminated . If speed is the major priority as in the case of a 5 hectare building site where Land Remediation Relief* may be applicable then on-site burial or Excavation, Selection and Removal would be more appropriate, though costs may be prohibitive.
*LRR was introduced by HMRC in 2001 to encourage new use of previously blighted land. Japanese Knotweed infestation did not previously qualify under the legislation's definition of 'blighted land', but since 1 April 2009, HMRC have accepted that Japanese Knotweed is sufficiently invasive and destructive that it satisfies their "harm" test.
